Basically, holes are made with a pitchfork or with specific tools on the entire surface of the lawn.
This operation serves to make the soil less compact and to allow air and water to penetrate the soil.

The aerator
The specific tool to do this is the aerator.
This tool consists of a roller with a series of spikes.
Rolling the roller on the ground creates the holes needed to aerate the roots of the grass seedlings.
